Adam had been away from home and Daisy for four years, six months and eleven days precisely, and during that time he’d suffered severe homesickness, crippling bouts of depression, hideous seasickness, five doses of Delhi Belly and agonising yet self-inflicted sunburn. Add this to unwanted advances and regular infatuations from both sexes, including a handful of randy divorcees, three widows and a rather persistent widower. But in the end and despite frequent urges to abandon ship, he’d come out the other side a stronger and definitely wiser man.

New Year always made Adam slightly maudlin in a reflective type of way. Over the years he had spent many nights like this, celebrating under jet black skies set ablaze with fireworks amidst the sound of cheering revellers. And no matter how much Champagne flowed through his veins and despite the frivolity of his shipmates and passengers, Adam always experienced the sensation of being utterly alone. The lure of a campsite nestled in the Loire and a house that he knew without doubt would have a chimney billowing smoke, the tiles on the roof covered with glistening frost and inside, someone he still loved dearly and longed to be with, even after all these years.

Although he could look back and laugh about it now, it hadn’t been easy and the separation from Daisy had almost killed him. He knew what it was to be one of the broken-hearted, dumped or worse, bereaved. That’s exactly how Adam felt for much of his first eighteen months in his new job. He missed Ryan too but had become used to their separation, always filling the gaps between visits with letters and phone calls.
